NO TRAVELS WITH HETTY!

Poor Hetty in the hospital waiting room

Hetty is still in Peter Curry’s hospital for sick Hymers in Warwickshire.. click link https://www.facebook.com/motorhomerepair/...Yes a long way from home ..We dropped her off in January on our way to Gatwick airport for a pre C-19 three week trip to the sun in Egypt with a hint she may be better by the time we arrived back ..

Not to be ..Peter breathing in with the mechanics shake of head telling us “Its the parts “and …”The corrosion is much worse than initially thought” shake of head again …sucks in breath again “Its going to cost a fortune” “Shall we scrape her “NOOOOOO we say ..Go for it we say ..Make her better and off we went back to Lancashire without her ..so…from what The Cook gathers another Hymer was taken to bits and Hetty gained a chassis …Then C-19 struck .. Work stopped as social distancing made it impossible for Peter and his workers to work in close contact

It’s now July 16th and still no Hetty The Driver has just said she will be back soon and he will ring Peter to get an update

A much more expensive adventure.. More spent on campsites than on any other trip and finding Aire de camping sites payable as we have been travelling in season .. €190 for four nights in a hostel boat park on Lake Garda .. with poor leccy and WiFi ..In retrospect and knowing the area now we would have parked up in the derelict Aire and winged the loo dumping .. I still think we could have got away with using the hostel for our washing but hey ho it’s only Euros ..

We normally run on €45 per day but have found diesel a lot more expensive as well..with the cheapest in Andorra at€1.066 and the most €1.48 in France

Best bits!

For the third time in the last five years it has to be Venice

St Marc sur Mer

Best sleepy spot !

Worst bit!

The disappointment of not getting to bathe in the hot springs at Saturna and the awful roads there after !

So that’s it for this adventure ..

BEST BITS AND STATISTICS

MOST IMPRESSIVE SKY

Hetty’s Crew have been back home now for 10 days .. Hetty is emptied .. back in storage with instructions to Ashley at http://pendlecaravanservices.yolasite.com/ ..Our do it all camper van mender to seal the leak in the main skylight ..

The washing is done but not the ironing .. but hey ho it will keep as its all summer stuff ..

The only problem in coming home was a knackered Central heating boiler .. Only 5 years old and it looks like of the thing had gone kaput..Called out our plumber ..A lots of oohing and scratching of heads and it was decided its the PCB ..The brains of the boiler ..The plumber will order one as it’s not in stock ..We are still waiting ..None in UK ..None in Germany where they are made ..Now in production so it may be here this week ..We are fortunate to have a wood burning stove in the kitchen and a gas burning log stove in the sitting room and a fan heater in the bathroom but zero hot water other than an electric shower so all in all we can cope ..I just think back to my days as a child with one fire in the living room and surprisingly we survived ..

To the costs of Hetty’s mini adventure ..Very similar to last year in Europe ..Only £1-80 per day more ..Fuel was at the most £1-34 per lt against €0.99 per lt in Sicily

Just one night payed for campsite on South Uist when we ran out of gas for the cooking and heating …£19 ..Well worth it to be plugged in to the Leccy for warmth ..Two nights on an aire at Argoil Beach..£2 per person per night in an honesty box on the door step of a croft ..Two nights on a carpark in Whitby at £8 per night ..The rest of our over night stops were of the wild camping variety ..FREE

A massive solar panel has been fitted to keep us full of leccy as we hate camp sites and wild camp most of the time …its all a bit out of my comfort zone but J knows all about stuff like this and he will keep us topped up ..He says we will have so much power we will be able to have film night so I have put all the DVD’s Ive been saving for a wet afternoon in ..packed

An extra cassette for the Loo has been purchased so we can go 6 days+ without panicking re:finding an emptying place ..Although in France there are even loo emptying place on Toll road services ..

New TV arial…We never watch TV ..

A new burglar alarm ..The other failed us in Sicliy 2014 but I think one is needed ..With this one we can be in the van at night and set it just for outside so if anyone tries it on when we are asleep it will go off ..eeeeek!

Two new leisure batteries  and a spare engine battery even a new battery for the jump start gadget..

MOT done ..service done ..and she is fit to travel

So off we go on another adventure ..watch this space…

“WILD CAMPING

(Or  trying never to pay for a campsite)

For the uninitiated

How to deal with laundry

Wash underwear nightly or have 20 pairs of pants with you or go commando..

Wear black as it doesn’t look to stain when food is dropped down yr front.. Let said dropped food dry and pick it off “Look no stain

If eating or cooking wear sweater inside out “look no stain” then to go out wear sweater the right side out

Have a bottle of Fabreeze with you .. To spray the clothes you have just picked dropped dinner off ..

Shower or strip wash daily and use deodorant ..Febreeze clothes !!

Laundry Liq instead of loo blue

Use biological concentrated washing liquid from Lidl (FORMIL).. Two caps full is the equivalent to the loo blue but is €2.50 per Lt ….This bio liq also works in your grey water tank or even throw in a dishwasher tab .. Works fine in hot weather

Black towels dry faster !!

Loo cassette empty ?

We only need to empty the loo every 8/9 days as we have two .. One in and one one the bike rack
Looking after water..Get a jug to let cold water out before hot appears.. Put cold in kettle ..a splash and turn off .. Then soap and rince .. Uses less water than washing up

Water can be “borrowed” from church yards or cemeteries as there’s usually a tap for the flower water .. Happy days l

Rules for selecting an overnight camping spot

By John
1 Does it look ok ,nice to have it to yourself but reassuring if other camper vans are near( not too near)always leave time to move on to your fall back location.
2 Is it free
3 Is it by the sea or mountains with a view
4 Do we need to empty the loo or fill with water ( this usually necessitates some cost) at a camp site or Sosta(sometimes we find this can be free at a sosta or some car parks)we do not need a mains hook up but if it’s included it saves on gas for fridge and hot water.
5 HOW MUCH !!!
6 Does it have wifi and occasionally we need a washing machine (it’s surprising how infrequent this is required , but when it is it can be a big job)
7 If it has a pool it’s a bonus
8 If it has a bar and restaurant this can be a negative point as it attracts holiday makers!
9 When you have permutated all of the above you then park ,level up the camper sort the fridge and get out a beer (if it has power rig the cables if it’s hot and sunny extend the awning)(this can also apply if rain is expected) get out a beer
10 Decide how long you want or need to stay and start planning for the next few days if you have not already done so.
11 If you are on your own by 19:00/dusk re-assess security or the feel of the place
12 Have a fall back location in case you don’t feel happy at your chosen location( this has only happened to us once )when our lovely beach location seemed to become a gay pickup spot.
