Scholarly Salamanca

n.b. photos are just snaps ..not edited so accept as they are ..

The drive from Avila wasn’t anything to write home about ..good duel carriageway but very flat and we now understand why Don Quijote lost his marble and tilted at windmills ..
On first appearances Salamanca looked like a large urban sprawl on the drive to the site but on arrival at the Don Quijote campsite ..N40.5830 W5.3611 by GPS ..sunny ..by the river …under trees…about 6km walk or by bus from the centre of Salamanca..looks like this will suit us for our first site stop off since leaving home ..and ..they have Wyfy ..
Cooking supper and the rumble started my our tummies but thunder …then lightning …and the down pour came with the most ferocious of storms …drink more wine and sing ..my remedy ..

After toast as we were on mains hook up ..to the uninitiated that means we have Leccy and a toaster …we miss toast when wild camping …..we set off for the walk to the bus stop 10 mins at the most ….and got off with everyone else ..we had no idea where we were until an American pointed us in the right direction to the main shopping area with all the usual suspects Zara , McDonald’s and the others past this lot there was a gate leading to the old part …it was bathed in sunlight ..golden Salamanca ..Plaza Mayor hit us head on with the noise of very lively kids on school outing , a pipe and drum band leading what looked like a protest march …a porticoed square with outdoor seating for the cafe scene ..

A massive student population study at the University which is a visual feast, founded in 1218 and is said to be equal to Oxford or Cambridge …traffic free streets await to take you on to the Cathedral begun in 1120.. See photos…

Lots of Convents , Monasteries and church as we wandered around …lovely looking eating places ,we tend not to eat out …BUT we will ….

Managed to find the bus back after a small shop for the most expensive wine so far € 1-19 less than £1 …
